A few loose ends remain before work will begin on a bicycle trail along First Street. However, those few items could be finished in time to begin work this spring, Noel told the council. One such area involves getting permission from the IC&E Rail Link to construct the bike path. "We were able to get ahold of the railroad," said Solchenberger, "and they're willing to talk and see what they can do to move this along." Eldridge's long-awaited bicycle path extension along First Street could be under construction this spring. The bike path now spans from Sheridan Meadows Park to Price Street. The extension would make the path reach East Iowa Street. The project, which would connect the path to one along East LeClaire Road, has an estimated cost of $223,000. Already, the city has a $120,826 federal grant, and grants from the Scott County Riverboat Authority, the Riverboat Development Authority and the Moonlight Chase. "That leaves us with $52,974, which will come out of sales tax funds," said Noel, noting the project is included in the 2005-2006 budget. "We're in good shape there, and it's a matter of getting a few loose ends tied up there."
