Construction is set to begin this week on the 1.75-mile recreational trail from West Union to Echo Valley State Park. Rausch Construction, subcontracting for Wicks Construction, will provide the initial grading for the project.
“It’s great to see construction of the trail get underway,” West Union Mayor Cam Granger said. “It’s a long time coming. I know there were a number of people not in favor of the project, but I believe once they see the number of people using it, they will realize the benefits it brings to the community.”
The City of West Union was approved for a $75,000 lowa Great Places Grant in 2021 for the trail which will go from city limits to the Jensen Trail at Echo Valley State Park. The land for the West Union project was acquired when city officials previously purchased the golf course grounds at a cost of $240,000.
