A Northwest Iowa driver accused of striking a young girl who was riding a bike is now facing more charges.

According to authorities, 22-year-old Laticia Whiting was driving in Ruthven, Iowa on June 9 when she struck 5-year-old Mackenzie Puterbaugh, and fled the area, all while the child’s bike was being dragged by her vehicle.

KUOO Radio says Whiting was originally charged with leaving the scene of an accident - causing serious injury, driving on the wrong side of the road, having an open container of alcohol and failure to provide financial liability. Now, she is also facing one charge of operating while intoxicated and one count of serious injury by vehicle. All these charges are misdemeanors or ordinance violations, except for the charge of serious injury by vehicle, which is a Class D Felony. If convicted of the felony, she would face a minimum of 5 years in prison.
