When the Snake Alley Criterium first began 40 years ago, it was a local event that attracted a few cyclists from other states.
These days, the Snake Alley Criterium has become an international event, a destination spot for some of the top racers in the world.
The annual Snake Alley Criterium is set to begin at 3 p.m. Friday with the Friday Night Fever Criterium, which took the place of the Road Races in 2022. The event has become a hit with the racers and the fans.

Race organizer Tony Martinez said racers from as far away as Australia and Japan will descend on Burlington for the two-day event.
“It’s a licensed race now, so there are a lot of points available in both races and the weekend,” Martinez said.
“That makes a big upgrade in racing and makes it more attractive for some of the top racers in the world to come to Burlington.
“Plus, with the uniqueness of Snake Alley, a lot of racers want to come and take on that challenge, as well.”
Martinez said fans will notice a different course on Saturday.
