Drivers in Waukee may have noticed new signs near roundabouts and crosswalks.

City leaders recently put up "Walk Your Bike" signs at the Warrior Lane roundabout. The signs are there to remind cyclists to get off their bikes or scooters before crossing the street. The city hopes it will reduce the number of crashes involving pedestrians near Waukee Middle School.

"It's part of a bigger effort to educate our youth about slowing down, getting off your bike, walking it so that you can be recognized by drivers and they have time to react to you," said Rudy Koester, Waukee Public Works director and city engineer. "As you can imagine, walking into a crosswalk is a lot slower paced than if you're on a bicycle that's going five to 10 miles an hour."
