A man riding a bike had to be airlifted to Iowa City for medical treatment after being seriously injured in a car accident in Fort Madison Wednesday evening.
Just before 7 p.m., a 49-year-old man from Fort Madison was riding a bike near the intersection of 15th Street and Avenue M when he was hit by a 2004 Ford Expedition traveling westbound, according to Fort Madison Police Chief Mark Rohloff.
Authorities say the bicyclist bypassed a stop sign before being hit by the truck and sustained observable leg and head trauma.
A nurse that happened to be at the scene was able to apply a tourniquet to the man’s injuries and the driver of the truck called 911.
The Fort Madison police and fire departments and Lee County EMS all responded to the scene to provide first aid.
An Air Evac medical helicopter was called to the scene and flew the man to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City for treatment.
As of Thursday, Rohloff said there is no update on the man’s condition.
The name of the victim and the driver of the truck have not been released at this time.
Due to the seriousness of the incident, the Iowa Department of Public Safety was contacted, and a traffic investigator was called to the scene to investigate the collision.
Rohloff said the case has been turned over to the state, who will determine all the facts surrounding the collision and decide if any charges will be filed.
