A man is facing charges after police say he struck a bicyclist after driving off from an attempted traffic stop.

Jimmie Lightner III, 21, faces charges of aggravated fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, and failure to report an accident causing great bodily harm.

According to Rock Island police:

An officer tried to pull over a black Chevrolet Impala at 3:53 p.m. Wednesday in the 4200 block of 11th Street.

The driver, later identified as Lightner, took off and the officer did not try to pull it over again.

The car sped south, turned east onto Blackhawk Road, and struck a 67-year-old bicyclist.

Lightner abandoned the vehicle in the 4500 block of 12th Street and ran from the area.

The bicyclist was taken to Unity Point Medical Center and was later transferred to the University of Iowa Medical Center. He remains there in critical condition as of Thursday afternoon.

Officers arrested Lightner in the 1200 block of 46th Avenue, according to police.
