411Community State Bank will sponsor the inaugural Jim Goodman Memorial Bike Ride - Jim's Ride - on Sept. 20. Registration for Jim's Ride will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the West Capitol Terrace on the State Capitol grounds. The 15-mile and 25-mile "pro rides" along Meredith Bike Trail start at 9:30 a.m.; a shorter 5-mile "family ride" will follow at 10 a.m.
Jim Goodman, died in June 2008 while competing in the swimming portion of the Hy-Vee Triathlon. In addition to his business ventures, political involvement, civic commitments and charitable contributions, Goodman coached his daughter's soccer team, hosted a weekly radio show, was a columnist for a monthly business magazine, served as president of the East Des Moines Chamber of Commerce and was adjunct professor at Drake University. The ride will benefit Orchard Place, Iowa's leading advocate for children with mental health and juvenile justice issues, where Goodman served as board president until his death June 22. Registration fees are $25 for adults, $10 for children under 12, and $50 for a family entry. After the ride, participants will enjoy a picnic lunch, live music and a Kids' Village featuring inflatables, crafts and games. Registration forms will be available at all 10 bank branches in the Des Moines metro area, as well as all Dahl's Foods stores and online at www.jimsride.com.
