trails users are slowing down trail construction. Delays and extra costs encoutered.

ANKENY TO WOODWARD TRAIL SEGMENT OPENING SOON; AVOID FINES BY WAITING TILL TRAIL IS OPEN TO USE IT Construction managers estimate that about ten miles of the Ankeny-to-Woodward Trail – between Ankeny and Sheldahl -- could open by October 1, and perhaps by mid-September. Completion of the trail will be most prompt if the public cooperates by staying off the trail and allowing construction crews to do their work. That users have pushed to ride the Ankeny to Woodward Trail while it’s still under construction underscores the hunger the public has for trails in Central Iowa, but the Ankeny to Woodward Trail is closed for the safety of the public and the crews working on it. Even portions of the trail which appear completed are not. Many of the safety systems (from handrails to signs) have yet to be installed, and crews continue to put finishing touches along the trail. Contractors have been replacing barricades torn down by users and they have had progress slowed by users. Costs of this trail may increase as a result. Polk County Conservation rangers and Ankeny Police have been politely asking for compliance – and many cyclists and pedestrians have understood and stopped using the trail. But many continue to ride or stroll in prohibited areas. The contractors need the area secured. Trail patrol is now taking place and violators will be fined. Fines exceed $100. The public’s cooperation is essential. All involved understand that everyone is eager to use the trail, and enthusiasm for this soon-to-be-outstanding facility is greatly appreciated. Meanwhile, please respect the posted signs and stay off the trail. Watch for upcoming news of a planned opening for the Ankeny to Sheldahl segment. If you would like to donate to the trail’s construction, please go to www.inhf.org. The trail has received a $1.75 million Community Attraction and Tourism Challenge Grant, requiring an additional $550,000 in fundraising by November 6, 2008. Thank you. Polk County Conservation
