DETAILS The project would expand Northwest 26th Steet into a four-lane connector from Southwest Oralabor Road in Ankeny to Interstate Highway 80, build an interchange at I-80 and create a new road from I-80 to Euclid Avenue in Des Moines. If this new street project goes in it will affect these recreational areas in many negative ways;
  • Neal Smith paved trail
  • Sycamore Mountain Bike Trail
  • Trestle to Trestle Trail
  • Des Moines River Water Trail
  • Several wetlands
  • Diverse wildlife areas
In a nutshell this project includes extending Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway to the interstate and making 26th street a 4-lane highway and adding a new interstate entrance and exit ramps. NW 26th Street FLYER This issue has been successfully opposed in the past, however the "powers that be" continue to pursue this proposal to build a 4-lane "elevated" road through the greenbelt, wetlands, and across the river, to connect to I-80.
