Kick off National Trails Weekend on Friday, June 6, by celebrating the grand opening of the Trestle to Trestle Trail.

Des Moines and Johnston Take part in an eight mile roundtrip bike ride from the Trestle to Trestle Trailhead at River Place (2309 Euclid Ave., Des Moines-Site of the former Target Store) to Van Dee’s Ice Cream Shoppe (5915 Merle Hay Rd., Johnston). A sweet ice cream treat and beverage will be donated by Van Dee’s Ice Cream and AE Dairy. Grand opening festivities will begin at 1 p.m. at River Place. At 1 p.m., 100 free youth bike helmets will be given away on a first come first serve basis. The helmets are being donated by The Great Outdoors Fund, Polk County Conservation and Bike World. Helmet fitting will occur on-site, as well as bike safety information distribution. Decorative painting projects will also occur on site by GreenArts and Open Arts supporters. At 2 p.m., a brief ceremony will take place acknowledging the grand opening and those who made it possible. Speakers include Angela Connolly, Polk County Board of Supervisors; Chris Coleman, City of Des Moines; Paula Dierenfield, City of Johnston; Tom Hadden, Metro Waste Authority; and Congressman Leonard Boswell. EVENT DETAILS The ice cream ride, led by our local dignitaries, will depart following the ceremony. Bike World will provide ride assistance along the route. All ages are welcome!
