Des Moines is one step closer to becoming a Bicycle Friendly Community with newly certified League Cycling Instructors.

~ Des Moines 14 cyclists attended a 20-hour League Cycling Instructor (LCI) Road I class in September. This was the first Road I class conducted in the Des Moines area . Marty Shukert of Omaha was the leader (he's the fellow wearing the yellow Minnesota jersey). Becoming a League Cycling Instructor (LCI) certifies you to teach BikeEd which is a great way to help cyclists in your community become more educated to ride bicycle more safely in traffic. Certified instructors can teach BikeEd classes to children as well as adults. Having certified LCI Instructors in the area will play a big part when the city of Des Moines reapplies for Bike Friendly Community status. What is "LCI Certification" ? The Road I class Gives cyclists the confidence they need to ride safely and legally in traffic or on the trail. The course covers bicycle safety checks, fixing a flat, on-bike skills and crash avoidance techniques and includes a student manual. Recommended for adults and children above age fourteen, this fast-paced, nine-hour course prepares cyclists for a full understanding of vehicular cycling. What happens now that we have LCI instructors? Become a proficient cyclist. Stay tuned as BikeEd classes will be set up for adults and children to learn how to ride your bike safely and confidently. Whether you are a long-time commuter, an avid club rider, or haven’t ridden in years, these fun fact-filled courses are sure to increase your knowledge, skill and confidence through BikeEd classes.
