On September 11, 2004, Baxter will host the second annual Tour de Trail. Join cyclists of all ages to ride up to 40 miles on the beautiful Chichaqua Valley Trail. Funds raised will go to the US Family Readiness Program, which supports children and families of active Iowa National Guard members. This will not be just a bike ride, it will be an all day event. To accommodate the Iowa/Iowa State fans, a 6:00 start will be offered. Registration will be from 6:00 to 10:00 at the Caboose at the trailhead in Baxter. The registration fee of $20 ($15 before September 1) includes a long sleeved T-shirt. The first 100 registered riders will receive $5 Baxter bucks redeemable at any Baxter business on September 11, 2004. Children 12 and under ride free. Ride any length of the 20-mile trail you want….just be sure to enjoy the scenery along the way! For the younger riders, the Baxter Police Department will sponsor a Bike Rodeo. Young cyclists will learn bike safety by traveling through a marked course. Any child who doesn’t have a bike helmet will be measured and receive a properly fitting helmet compliments of the Baxter PD. Funds for the Helmets for Kids program were provided by the first annual Tour de Trail. Thank you riders! Food and fun will await the returning cyclists. Many door prizes, local entertainment, food vendors, music more will be waiting at the Caboose. Homemade goodies, fruit smoothies, craft vendors, and even a booth offering perennial plants will be available. Several area businesses are offering specials to welcome the cyclists. The Baxter Bucks will be accepted at all area businesses, including vendor booths. At 3:00, great door prizes will be awarded to registered cyclists. You must be present to win, so don’t go home early! For the Iowa/Iowa State fans, O’Kelley’s Steak & Pub will have the game broadcast on a large screen TV. The game will be on both the outside patio and inside the pub. Great food specials are on the menu, and for those who wish to stay for the evening, O’Kelley’s will have a band performing on the outside patio. Don’t miss out on the fun! Whether you are a serious cyclist, a family biker, or a spectator, please join us at the caboose on September 11. What better way to commemorate 9/11 than by supporting the families of our troops? Come on…have a great time in Baxter and support a great cause! See you September 11! For more information, contact Peg Kimberly at Baxter City Hall (641)-227-3120. Large groups and buses, please call ahead for parking and pre-registration information.
