CONGRATULATIONS Iowa City!! They are the second community in Iowa to receive this designation!

Iowa City IA On Tuesday, Iowa City was awarded the bronze designation as a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists. This makes them the second community in Iowa to receive this designation. Cedar Falls was awarded bronze in the Spring. Here is what the League had to say about Iowa City: Community Highlights: Iowa City boasts over 275 miles of low volume residential and collector streets that are popular for beginner and experienced cyclists alike. The abundant street trees create a pleasant canopy that provides shade during the summer and incredible scenery in autumn. This combined will public bicycling education programs and programs like the bike library are working and it can be seen in the bicycle commute numbers that are six times the national average in a four-season community. Most Recent Significant Accomplishment: The City worked diligently to develop and adopt the Metro Bicycle Master Plan. It also installed eight blocks of new bike lanes and 20 blocks of new shared lane arrows. Current Activities to Promote Bicycling: The City offers discounted helmets to residents at Recreation Centers, enforces their bike parking ordinance requiring bike racks at new commercial and multi-family developments, installs bike racks at new public buildings, and offers covered bike parking. *** Stay tuned as there will probably be more news relating to this extraordinary event in the coming days.
