Dear Madam Mayor and Johnston Councilmen,

We appreciate your efforts on behalf of residents to provide a trail along Beaver Drive to allow safe travel between neighborhoods and to Johnston. This is an important safety concern and recreational opportunity.

We believe that the trail should be started in the spring of 2013, and should commence with construction of segments A, C, and E as the first phase. This would extend from the northern city limits all the way down to NW 78th Avenue near Stark Armory. This alone would connect Walnut Ridge Park, Lakeview Access, and the spillway/Neal Smith Trail. Additionally, the ends of these segments would be less than ½ mile from Acorn Valley Campground to the north and Hyperion to the south. The cost for completion of these three segments is less than 1/3 of the total price, and would include access for hundreds of families.

The cost projected for Phase One (segments A, C, and E) is $864,169 of which $181,464 in grant funds are available. This would leave only $682,705 to complete what is essentially the bulk of the trail. Building more segments together would save the city money by decreasing contractor and traffic control setup costs, and disrupt less traffic.

We urge you to proceed with trail construction as outlined above, commencing in spring of 2013.

Sincerely,
