Held in late September, beginning and ending in Maquoketa State Park, Maquoketa, Iowa. It’s never the same course twice, though I have my favorite areas of Jackson County that I just cannot resist treating folks to. It’s free, is great long-haul training for Spotted Horse and if for no other reason than to spend an entire day in the saddle, Turds of Misery is Level 3 fun at its best.
The means to an end are largely up to you. Firstly, don’t be a dumbass. If you haven’t put in the training for long miles and lots of climbing, don’t bother showing up. Jackson County is gorgeous, but hungry for fresh blood. The hills can be unrelenting and if it’s wet, make sure you’ve got your spatula, cake knife and your bike hauling harness…you’ll need it.
There will be a C-Store every 30-40 miles so plan your nutrition/hydration accordingly. That said, it’s important to prepare for some amount of trouble because you never know. Also, you may expect to ride a 14mph pace and finish well before dark, but pack a headlight, as well as a taillight.
Also, as with any gravel event, be prepared for dogs. Not all the time, not every year, but sometimes Fido will come out to "play." Plan accordingly.
Hopefully you're gaining an understanding of this event: it's not a race, it's not easy, there is no SAG or support. You are on your own. (Hey, at least I provide GPX files now.)
