Recap/Results

Spotted Horse 2019 results are linked below.

85 people from 13 different states registered.

72 were expected at check in, with 34 riders on the start list for the 200 mile, and 38 riders in the 150 mile.

60 riders took the start after waiting 40 minutes for a line of thunderstorms with lightening to pass. A second line of thunderstorms passed over the route a few hours into the event, resulting in several hours of rain and difficult road conditions. Sunny skies, headwind, and mild temperatures dominated the afternoon and evening.

The route included 3.5 miles of level B dirt roads. There was over 11,000 feet of climb in the 200, and approximately 9000 feet of climb in the 150.

10 riders finished the 200 mile; 3 women, 7 men. 32 riders finished the 150 mile; 6 women, 26 men. Several of the 200 mile starters went on to finish the 150 mile distance after changing distances at the checkpoint.

This is a tough event for tough people, and we are honored that you chose to spend your Saturday with us! Thank you all for another great event! Hope to see you next year, 10/24/2020.

Description

Gravel

Distance - 200 or 150 miles

Full course: 200 miles
Short course: 150 miles

Spotted Horse Gravel Ultra is a self-supported gravel and dirt road adventure, and no crews are allowed on the course. There will be opportunities to resupply at convenience stores, and the distances between them will be communicated to all registered participants.

There are categories for open, single speed, fat bike, tandem.

If you are considering longer self supported gravel events like Trans Iowa or the Alexander, this is a good place to test your gear and your mettle. If you’ve completed multiple 100 km or 100 mile rides and are looking for your next challenge, you will find it here.

Visit the Spotted Horse website for detailed registration and location information.

Route

Expect it to be very hilly, with many turns and few flat and straight sections. There will be dirt B-roads, bridges, a water crossing, and probably some hike-a-bike sections. Parts of the course will be remote, with limited cell service. Other areas will be residential farmland, but all should be low-traffic, scenic Iowa roads.
