Trail Ride

Distance - 13 miles one-way

Julie Hugo Sumpter passed away on December 9th 2015.

Julie was an avid cyclist, a partner-in-crime and the other half of BIKEIOWA.com for the last 16+ years. Her smile, her laugh, her sense of adventure and caring-nature were just a few of her memorable traits.

This is Julie's actual Birthday and we'll ride in her honor to CELEBRATE her birthday and life. She would have been 51 years young today.

Julie was one of the founders of the Friday night A.S.S. Ride (Ankeny, Sheldahl, Slater) and we invite you all to come along with us. Let's enjoy the day on the bicycles with friends and visit a bench dedicated to Julie near the Oasis...

The Ride

The starting point will be the Wheelhouse in Ankeny. They will have a large tent outside in the parking lot with food and beverages to accommodate us all. Please thank Chandler for going above and beyond for getting the permit from the city to put up the tent outside!

We'll meet at 2pm, and probably hang out at the Wheelhouse for at least an hour if not more. We won't be in a hurry and will spend the day enjoying friendship and remembering Julie.

After leaving the Wheelhouse, we'll stop by the Julie's bench at the Oasis for a moment of silence and then sing Happy Birthday to her before riding to Slater.

The Nite Hawk Bar & Grill in Slater will be serving food and beverages. We'll hang here for awhile too... Feel free to ride further to the Flat Tire Lounge and check out the bridge too.

On the ride home, we plan to stop by the Wheelhouse again.

Patience

PLEASE be patient with the wait staff at the establishments we stop at. We will be a BIG crowd may overwhelm them for a bit.

Animals

Most of you know, Julie LOVED animals almost more than she loved cycling. If you wish to donate to the Julie Hugo Sumpter Memorial Fund - Give to the animals... YouCaring fundraiser, just click on the link. So far $7697 dollar have been raised for the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in  Kanab, Utah where Julie volunteered in April 2015.

We will have a limited supply of Memorial Ride Coozies for sale during the ride where ALL proceeds will be given to the Animal Rescue League in Des Moines (see photo below). The coozies will be a full-color sublimation of Julie and Maya walking in a beautiful green field that her brother Bruce took in Northern Iowa a few years ago (see below for photo). For those who don't know, Maya was hit and killed by a car a few weeks before Julie passed away. This photo says it all/

Parking

Absolutely NO PARKING in the Wheelhouse parking lot. If you drive there, please park in the Ankeny Chrisitan Academy directly across the street (to the North). We have permission to park there.

THANK YOU

Thanks to ALL of you for your support. Julie was one special lady and she is dearly missed every day. Take this time to remember her, her life and think about just how short life can be.

Route

Ride the High Trestle Trail from Madrid to the Oasis, to Sheldahl and Slater. Feel free to ride beyond to Madrid, the Bridge and Woodward.
