An almost-daily Sauk Rail Trail user, retired longtime Carroll dentist Marty Halbur calls the recent donation he and his wife, Dee, made toward repaving part of the trail a “great investment.”

Carroll County Conservation Foundation is raisinf funds to supplement $1.1 million already secured for repaving nearly 4 miles of trail from Swan Lake State Park to the access just north of Highway 30 west of Carroll from its original asphalt to concrete. The additional funds will go toward expanding that project, repaving an additional 2 miles west to Maple River Junction. If accomplished, the trail’s entire span around Swan Lake and to Lake View, in Sac County, then would be concrete. Proponents of the project say concrete provides a smoother, safer, more-durable surface. They say the asphalt surface, now more than 20 years old, is requiring frequent repairs and has turned rather rough in some sections.
