Carroll County Conservation shifted into high gear on plans to resurface Sauk Rail Trail between Swan Lake State Park and Maple River from asphalt to concrete, thanks to a grant of more than $900,000 awarded recently through the Iowa Department of Transportation.

The $900,186 was awarded under the COVID-19 Relief Recreational Trails Program. The Iowa DOT website says the Iowa Transportation Commission approved a one-time, $5 million allocation of funding to partially offset COVID-19-related reductions in the State Recreational Trails program.

“We were one of the lucky recipients,” Carroll County Conservation Director Jason Christensen said. “Out of 83 applications, they chose six projects across the state.”

In addition to the grant, Carroll County and the City of Carroll each approved $100,000 for the project, boosting the total to $1,100,186.
