A new walking and biking trail is in the works to connect people from downtown Council Bluffs to downtown Omaha.

Brandon Garrett, Director of Development for the city of Council Bluffs, said the city will be creating a new pedestrian trail about a block south of west Broadway on 1st Avenue, to make it easier for people without a car to get around the city.

“Broadway is probably the least bicycle friendly street in Council Bluffs," Zach Somers, owner of Extreme Wheels Bike and Sport in Council Bluffs said. “Being able to use that, arterial available space would be so beneficial to so many pedestrians in the area instead of having to chance Broadway.”

Garrett said approximately 30 percent of the Council Bluffs population lives within a half mile of where the trail will be going in.

"There are approximately 128,000 jobs within five miles of this property. It’s a really key and crucial piece of future infill and redevelopment for our whole metro,” Garrett said.

No personal property will need to be purchased for the project, Garrett said the land is considered public right of way.The trail will stretch approximately two miles long and be 12 feet wide. Garrett said the corridor itself will be approximately 66 feet wide to accommodate the potential for future transit projects within the city.

The new trail will connect two of the city’s existing bike trails to 1st Avenue.

“The 1st Avenue trail has a connection at 16th Street in the east and 35th Street in the west. This important segment would connect those two pieces and get our citizens into the rest of the trail system,” Garrett said.
