Changes are on the horizon for Clinton’s riverfront trail as the city plans a $1.2 million project to enhance it from the U.S. 30 Bridge all the way to Eagle Point Park.

The Clinton Clinton Council agreed Tuesday to submit an Iowa Great Places grant application to land $400,000 for the “More Things to do With a River View” project. The city, which earlier this year was re-designated an Iowa Great Place, was invited to apply for the grant.

If Clinton receives the grant in fiscal year 2020, the city will provide a $400,000 match, secured in 2019A general obligation capital loan notes, to help pay for a project that will enhance the 12-mile Discovery Trail, provide security and make it accessible to all.

Clinton City Administrator Matt Brooke told the council Tuesday that enhancements throughout the length of the 12-mile trail will include trail work from 33rd Avenue North to Eagle Point Park, all-new sensor lights on the trail from 19th to 25th avenues north and the installation of 10 to 12 bump-out areas north of Ninth Avenue North on the trail up to and past the Sawmill Museum. Security cameras also will be installed up to 25th Avenue North.

Brooke said all 32 bumpouts up and down the river will be modified and adapted. Some will be finished out with pergolas, others with swings, and various types of seating will be installed.

Concrete work will be done at Lubbers Fountain on the west side of Riverview Drive and behind the Clinton Area Showboat Theatre in preparation for the Freedom Rock which will be installed there.
