High Trestle Trail, a popular recreational trail near Woodward known for its beautiful blue lights at night, just got a little darker.

Boone County authorities said they will be turning off the lights earlier to curb loud noise and vandalism, a move that’s been met with a lot of criticism.

The Boone County Conservation Board said starting Sept. 25, they will turn off the lights at 10:30 p.m. instead of midnight, but trail lovers said it’s not necessary to punish those who aren’t breaking the rules.

“It’s cooler riding at night,” cyclist Jorge Zamore said of the 25-mile trail between Ankeny and Woodward. “The scenery, seeing the bridge light up, it’s a pretty nice effect, going through the tunnel effect. I know a lot of people come from out of town just to see them.”

Blue LED lights create the spectacular sight, but the lights will be going dim sooner.
