This was going to be a special RAGBRAI for Bob Philips— his first attempt at the full route, with his daughter and granddaughters cycling by his side.
He wanted to make sure he could keep up, so the 69-year-old committed himself to training with his bicycle on the country road loop between Nashua and Charles City.
“It was our opportunity to bond with our daughter and son-in-law and their children, who live a great distance away,” said his wife, Mary Lou Philips.
But those plans were shattered Wednesday just before noon, on the same county road where Bob Philips trained, when his bicycle was hit by a Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Todd Schriever, 50, of Marble Rock, according to authorities.
The two were traveling south on County Road T64 in rural Floyd County when the crash occurred.Philips was flown to Floyd County Memorial Hospital but died of his injuries.
Schriever wasn't injured, and no charges have been filed in the case.
