Pottawattamie County will eventually have a trail system not only
connecting communities within its borders, but to places elsewhere. The
county’s Board of Supervisors’ approved Tuesday the plans and
specifications of a 1.8-mile trail along Railroad Highway just north of
Council Bluffs. The action comes after five years of planning.
“This is the start,” said Brian Shea, chairman of the Pottawattamie County Trails Association. “We’re moving forward.”
This trail will start from Husker Lane to County Road L34 and will be installed on the east side of the highway.
It’s the beginning of an important element to the county, supervisor Scott Belt said.
“Trails
are an amenity we need for people, especially for young families, a
quality of life amenity for those folks,” he said. “It will encourage
tourism and possible spur economic growth in those communities. What’s
more, it will allow people to have another alternative to get to those
communities, such as walking, biking, pulling a wagon, using strollers. I
think that this is what people are looking for as far as activities
outdoors.”
