A woman was arrested for assault for allegedly revving her engine at an 8-year-old cyclist who was riding in the street.
Officers arrived in the 7000 block of Southwest 15th Street at 4:35 p.m. Sunday after the cyclist’s step mother called police on an apparently aggressive driver, according to a police report.
The woman claimed Jennifer Lois McKelvey, 42, of Des Moines drove up behind her 8-year-old stepson who was riding his bicycle in the street and “revved her engine.”
McKelvey told police she was revving her engine to scare the boy because kids are always riding their bikes in the street and “never get out of the way,” the report states.
Though the stepmother also claimed that McKelvey hit the child with her car, there were no witnesses and the boy was uninjured.
Police arrested McKelvey for assault and she was taken to the Polk County Jail Sunday but released later that day, according to the Polk County Jail website.
A call to McKelvey's home went unanswered.
