It may be 2017 before development actually appears, but a proposed
vision for a segment of trail outside of Columbus Junction was presented
Tuesday to the Louisa County Board of Supervisors.Louisa County
Trails Council Chairperson Jeanne Mott distributed a design report to
the board, explaining a $119,000 State Recreational Trails grant had
been awarded for 2017 for development of the trail, which will run from
the Louisa County Fairgrounds southeast along the former Chicago, Rock
Island and Pacific Railroad corridor.
The corridor is currently owned and maintained as an undeveloped trail by the Louisa County Conservation Board.
Mott
said the design report had been funded earlier through a Trees Forever
grant, with support from the Iowa Department of Transportation and the
U.S. Federal Highway Administration.
“We can’t start the project
until (the grant funding) is available and nothing is set in stone,”
Mott said, explaining a local share for the grant also still needed to
be raised.
Meanwhile, Mott indicated she and other trail
supporters and partners would begin to present the trail vision report
to area groups to show how the approximately two-mile trail segment
would look once development was finished.
