It's
not about the bike, it's about helping young people learn new skills
and master physical challenges. The Youth Off Road
Riders cycling program, offered through the Neighborhood Centers of
Johnson County, has inspired young people to ride and even compete.
Here's an
example: Willie, a West High School junior, has been involved since he was
an eighth grader. Before joining YORR, he felt alone and disconnected from
people with the same interests. The program gave him a place to meet other kids
his age. He says the cycling community "gets me," and he now works at
a local bike shop and competes successfully at the junior level. Willie is just
one of the success stories at theYouth Off Road Riders program.
On Friday,
March 6, YORR supporters are holding a fund-raising event from 6-9 pm at the Terry Trueblood Recreation Center
lodge. The event, which will be a silent auction, includes a display of hand-built bicycles from the
class of University of Iowa Professor Steve McGuire.
