A bicyclist was transported to an Iowa City hospital Wednesday night after being struck by a car along U.S. 61.
The incident occurred at 8:41 p.m. in rural Scott County near West Lake Park.
A
recumbent-style bicycle was attempting to cross U.S. 61 when it was
struck by a westbound vehicle driven by John Hillgartner, 60, of Blue
Grass. Hillgartner attempted to avoid the male bicyclist, but was unable
to and struck the bike on its right side with the front left of his
vehicle, according to the Scott County Sheriff's Department.
The bicyclist was not wearing reflective clothing or a helmet.
The car’s driver initially didn’t see the bike, police said. Once he
saw the bicyclist the driver tried to avoid a collision. He was unable
to and struck the bicyclist, authorities said.
The cyclist was not wearing reflective clothing or a helmet,
officials said. He was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and
Clinics but the extent of his injuries was unknown, officials said.
The bicyclist was transported to University of Iowa Hospitals with unknown injuries.
The driver was not cited and the accident investigation was closed.
