OSKALOOSA, Iowa —Oskaloosa police have issued an alert to residents after a mountain lion was spotted on the east side of town, the Oskaloosa Herald newspaper reported.

Police said the big cat was reported Saturday at 3 p.m. near the 100 block of Highland Avenue. The Herald reported witnesses said the mountain lion was headed north at the time.

The area is located on the east side of the city near a wooded area.

The Herald reported that officers responded to the area, but were unable to find the animal.

Police issued the alert as a caution to residents, mushroom hunters and bike trail users. Anyone seeing the big cat is asked to call the Oskaloosa Police Department by dialing 911.
