Waterloo, IA By JEFF REINITZ, jeff.reinitz@wcfcourier.com A Waterloo man was shot in the foot while he was riding his bicycle early Friday morning. The incident capped a week of shootings, most of which happened in the same neighborhood. Police and paramedics were called to the 500 block of Elm Street at 1:35 a.m. where they found Darrell Christopher Tyree Oneal, 19, with a gunshot wound, according to the police report. Officers determined he was riding his bike in the 400 block of Independence Avenue, which is about a block away, when he was shot. Police found five spent .22-caliber shell casings. Oneal, of Waterloo, was taken to Allen Hospital for treatment, but his injuries aren’t considered life threatening, said Capt. John Beckman with the Waterloo Police Department. He said it wasn’t clear if Oneal was targeted in the attack or was shot at random. Oneal is the fourth person to be struck by gunfire in Waterloo this week. On Sunday, 24-year-old Joseph Matthew Spates’s finger was grazed by a bullet after someone shot at his Elm Street home, apparently from a vehicle. Two youths in the house were cut by flying glass and debris. Then shortly before 1 a.m. Monday Marhia Martin, 16, of Waterloo, was shot in the leg in the area of West Fifth Street and the Highway 218 overpass. Police arrested Mark Anthony Kidd in connection with the attack. Then on Tuesday, Ronald Lavonne Talbert, 20, was shot in the leg while he and others were standing outside a home at 440 Cherry St. at about 12:45 a.m. Both the Elm and Cherry street shootings were within a few blocks of Friday’s shooting on Independence.
