The Fayette Council Monday (June 4th) approved a bid of $380,790 from Minowa Construction, Inc. to advance the multi-use recreational trail and construct a bridge over the Volga River. Doing so, will link the city with the popular Big Rock Country Club - via an asphalt trail suitable for walking and bicycling.
Engineer Jon Biederman's earlier estimate for the work was $432,391.
"I thought it was an excellent quote," said Biederman. "My estimate was none too high."
Other bids included $400,988 from Peterson Contractors, $416,377 from Tschiggfrie Excavating and $419,309 from Taylor Construction.
Minowa, of Harmony, Minnesota, is a subsidiary of Bruening Rock Products. Bids were opened May 20 by the Iowa Department of Transportation.
Work is to be complete by Oct. 30, with 35 working days expected, for construction of an additional six-tenths of a mile of asphalt trail, and putting the bridge in place. A portion of the new trail will run somewhat parallel with Madison Street. The existing rec trail connects Klock's Island park with the business district.
Tschiggfrie Excavation may be in town Thursday if not deterred by rain. The firm will repair wash outs near the rec trail that resulted from flooding earlier this spring, remove the silt fences and do other work not yet completed.
