Familiar with the term ‘rain garden’? Do you picture a giant terrarium and think that there is no way you can incorporate that into your home or business? Find out more through some hands-on planting experience. WHEN? Tuesday, May 20th, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., WHERE? the Trestle to Trestle Trail-head at River Place which is located at 2309 Euclid Avenue in Des Moines (site of the former Target Store at MLK and Euclid). The Trestle to Trestle Trail which extends from the inter- urban trail bridge in Des Moines to the Beaver Creek Trestle Bridge in Johnston has been designed to include conservation landscaping- specifically 4 rain gardens totaling 2.6 acres. The public is encouraged to take part in this volunteer opportunity to learn how to plant a rain garden that will help improve water quality and add beauty. Rain gardens soak up water, clean it, and slow it down. This protects our streams, lakes, and tributaries. Stop by River Place to assist with the planting or just stand back, watch, and take it all in so you can learn how to plant a rain garden at your home or business in the future. Wear old clothes and dress appropriately according to the weather forecast. For more information, contact Polk County Conservation at 515-323-5300.
