CORRECTIONVILLE, Iowa -- The grand opening and dedication of the new recreational trail connecting Correctionville and Little Sioux County Park will be at 11 a.m. Sept. 1 at the trail head in Little Sioux Park.
The official trail name will be unveiled during the event hosted by the Woodbury County Conservation Board, project owner.
The concrete path which is 10 feet wide and 1.7 miles long provides numerous scenic views as it traverses along old gravel mining ponds and the Little Sioux River.
Interpretive exhibits located near the west end of the bridge describe the unique 120-year-old Pratt through truss railroad bridge that was rehabilitated to carry the path across the Little Sioux River. The exhibits also tell of the impact railroads had on the development of communities such as Correctionville.
The new recreational trail will be restricted to non-motorized modes of transportation such as walking, jogging, bicycling and in-line skating.
The original construction contract for the project was $991,655. Elk Horn Construction of Sergeant Bluff was the prime contractor. Envisioned in 1999, trail construction began in October 2006 and was completed this month.
Funding for the project came from major grants including a state Resource Enhancement and Protection grant, a state Recreational Trail grant, a state Historic Site Preservation grant and a Department of Transportation Enhancement grant. Significant funding also was received from Missouri River Historical Development, the City of Correctionville and private donations.
