WHAT: Central Iowa union leaders plan a press conference Thursday to express their opposition to the “Yes to Destiny” sales tax proposal on the ballot July 10 in Polk, Dallas and Warren counties.
WHY: Union leaders say voters should consider that “basic needs” are not being met in the three-county area. A regressive tax to finance so-called “quality of life” efforts such as bicycle trails, they say, should not take precedence over citizens’ fundamental needs.
QUOTE: “The increase in the sales tax far outweighs any reduction in property taxes for the average working person in central Iowa. The benefits are skewed to businesses and large property owners,” said Don Brown, vice president of the South Central Iowa Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO.
Press conference
WHEN: Thursday 10:30 a.m.
WHERE: Machinists Hall, 2000 Walker St., Des Moines.
