A recreation trail bridge connecting the Lewis and Clark trail in Sioux City, Iowa with the Dakota Dunes area of South Dakota is in the planning stage. The $500,000 project has received $300,000 in state and local funding commitments and a fund drive is underway to raise the remaining $200,000 from private sources. Assuming a successful private campaign, the bridge could be under construciton in early 2007. The bridge will be a win-win situation opening up the longer trail sections available in Sioux City Iowa and South Sioux City Nebraska to SD residents and it will provide a shorter and safer ride for Iowa and Nebraska residents riding to the trails in Adams Homestead and Nature Center and many miles of flat and bike friendly blacktops in the adjacent South Dakota area. Riders will be able to avoid busy 4 lane Iowa Highway 12/Riverside Boulevard in Sioux City. Once built, it will be possible for riders to ride between all three states solely on trail in a short 4 mile distance.
