BIKEIOWA NOTE:
The cyclist who was killed, Scott Habermehl, grew up in Shenandoah, Iowa and then went on to study physics at Iowa State University before moving to Florida.

Scott's 2024 obituary can be seen here.

Thanks to Dave Mable for letting us know that Scott was an ISU grad. We missed this "Iowa tie" last year.

We will mention and ride for Scott in the May 21st 2025 Ride of Silence in Des Moines.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —

Police have charged a 13-year-old with murder, taken an 11-year-old into custody and are continuing to search for a 15-year-old in the apparently deliberate hit-and-run of a bicyclist in Albuquerque that was recorded on video inside a stolen car last year.

Scott Habermehl, 63, was biking to work on May 29, 2024, just before 5 a.m. when he was hit and run over, according to Albuquerque police.

Albuquerque Police Chief Harold Medina said his department closed the case because there was initially not enough evidence to see what kind of vehicle hit Habermehl.

Police reopened the case in late February when two juveniles reported seeing an Instagram video of the incident. Shortly after, APD's digital intelligence team identified the cyclist as Habermehl.

Police said three people were in the car, including 13-year-old Johnathan Overbay, 15-year-old William Garcia and an unnamed 11-year-old boy.

The video shows Habermehl driving his bike, which included a bike light on the bike, in a designated bike lane. Then the trio is overheard encouraging the driver to, "just bump him [Habermehl]." The juveniles also appear to tell the driver to go around 15 to 20 miles per hour. Officials said they were, "literally laughing about what they had just done, as they fled."

When asked how the kids were involved in the situation given their young age, officials responded by saying they were "runaways" and "dropouts."

Overbay was arrested Monday and charged with murder.

Garcia is also being charged with murder but has not been found. Officials on Tuesday encouraged him to turn himself in.

The 11-year-old boy was located on Tuesday night, March 18. He is too young to be charged.

"There's basically legislation which prevents us from being able to charge this individual for a crime," Medina said.

"These children are murderers," Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller said at the press conference. "They have got to be in custody."

One of the suspects sitting in the front seat of the car also appears to hold a handgun. APD said Tuesday it has not located that gun since last year.
