A stretch of Park Avenue now has painted green lanes specifically for bicyclists.

The city of Waterloo and the Iowa Northland Regional Council of Governments worked together to paint a green stripe from Franklin Street to the Park Avenue bridge designed to enhance bicyclist visibility and safety.

The city received a $4,000 grant through the Cedar Valley Trails Partnership to fund the project.

Bike lanes on the road were installed in 2017 but had confusing layouts, according to INRCOG, leading to increased risks for cyclists and reduced effectiveness of the lanes. In 2018, Waterloo was the seventh most dangerous city for bicyclists in the U.S., according to a report by security company ADT.
