A section of a popular Des Moines trail is reopening to the public Friday.
Phase D of the Bill Riley Trail project is the first of four phases the city is committed to finishing by the fall.
"We're infusing over $1,000,000 into the trail section here," said Daniel Calvert, development and planning administrator for Des Moines Parks and Recreation.
The city of Des Moines has more than 76 miles of paved trail and that is expanding. Calvert said the plan is to connect south to Carlisle and beyond through the Central Iowa Trails Network.
"We like to say that the city of Des Moines is the central hub of the Iowa Trail Network and it revolves around the rivers, the raccoon and Des Moines rivers. And we're providing connections to each of our parks, neighborhoods, and beyond into the state of Iowa," Calvert said.
