Downtown Dubuque’s first bicycle lanes will be sprayed on the pavement next month, giving bike riders more protection and visibility as they pedal through downtown.

The bicycle lane pilot project has been planned for sections of Ninth Street going downhill from Bluff Street to the east and a parallel section of 10th Street going back uphill to the west a block away.

The two sections will be connected by pavement marked for shared bicycle-car traffic going north and south on Main and Elm Streets.

“We’re trying to introduce a pilot that shows what is possible,” said Dubuque civil engineer Jon Dienst. “We want to see how the public reacts to that and go from there.”
