Construction at Mid-Prairie poses a challenge for 2024 ride
The Kalona City Council met in regular session Monday night where much of the agenda focused on bike rides in 2024.
Council directed staff to continue to work with the Iowa Gravel Series who plan on hosting a gravel bike ride starting at the Kalona Historical Village on May 4. They estimate between 150-200 riders of all ages will register and participate in the May event. Schlabaugh stated that the city has been working with the Iowa Gravel Series along with the Kalona Chamber of Commerce and the Kalona Historical Village on some of the logistics in anticipation of hosting the event in rural Washington, Johnson and Iowa County. Council directed staff to continue to work on the event and prepare the resolution for street closures closer to the time of the event.
Schlabaugh updated council that the city has received a host town packet from RAGBRAI to determine interest in potentially being an overnight stop July 25, 2024. Staff shared some logistics concerns that if selected by RAGBRAI for a July overnight we’d not be able to have enough greenspace for rider accommodations.
