Mid Winter Meltdown Sat, Jan 18th 2003
Posted Jan 1, 2003
3,497
This year, the Meltdown continues... The Mid-Winter Meltdown will commence on Saturday January 18th at 5 pm at the The 7 Flags Event Center. (This is the night before the official RAGBRAI meeting, so many cyclists will be in town that evening!) This year, all proceeds go toward programs to benefit youth cycling in Iowa. Two programs that will benefit from the Midwinter Meltdown proceeds are: A program that will combine youth aged 13-18, with volunteer mentors, for the goal of developing a healthy spirit, mind and body, and a productive approach to life's challenges through preparation for and participation in RAGBRAI.
“Smart Wheeler Ride Safely”
program - a cycling program that helps keep our children safe, keep them active, and teach them about the benefits of cycling. The pilot program will be provided to 38 Iowa elementary schools for use in their third and fourth grade physical education classes next spring. Last year, the cyclists, the firefighters and many others came together to raise funds for the family of John Moran, a member of the FDNY and RAGBRAI's team Escape From New York. Over $50,000 was raised for a good cause and we all had a great time!

ATTENTION ALL BIKERS AND FRIENDS!
Here we are, half way to RAGBRAI! If you are anything like us, your bike is clean and greased, your chamois are clean and dry and your bandanas are folded and tucked away nicely in a drawer some where…… YEA RIGHT! Your bike still has the road grime from last RAGBRAI; your chamois and bandana are stuffed in a Rubbermaid container ever since your last ride. Which in fact could get you selected for a Nobel Prize for the new strains of bacteria you are growing. I hear Iraq is always looking... Here is an opportunity to jump start your year: You and all your filthy little friends are invited to the MID WINTER MELTDOWN! This is nothing more than a shameless excuse to get together to drink and party! Well we are raising a little money for "Youth Cycling in Iowa" but we won't let that interfere with our mission. Come help us raise a little money, drink a little beer and gear up for the 2003 biking season. Oh yea, for those of you coming in to town for the RAGBRAI Kick Off Meeting, this is just a great way to prepare you for the mind numbing rhetoric to come.
