Squealing Brakes

Q
: What's the best way to silence squealing brakes? And please don't tell me to oil them.
A
: Okay, and don't use grease either. If the pads are excessively worn or hard and glazed from age, replacing them might be all it takes. If not, make sure all the brake parts are tight and properly adjusted. The pads should be aligned with the rim and toed in slightly. That is, the front of the pads should contact the rim first when the brake lever is squeezed. Also, make sure the rim sidewalls are free of built-up pad material or other substances. If not, use a solvent such as acetone to clean them, being careful not to get any on the tires or your skin. Mike Koenig.
