April 24-25 Trans Iowa V6 begins in Grinnell. If you ain't got the kahunas to tackle 330 miles on gravel, you are welcome to come try a 63 mile ride that same day.

Grinnell, IA

320 miles in 33 hours

Trans Iowa V6, the gravel road based bicycle race set to take place on April 24th-25th is an event of epic endurance for cyclists that will be taking on an approximately 320 mile loop in 33 hours or less starting and finishing in Grinnell Iowa. Obviously, not everyone can attain to such a heady challenge, but you can get an idea of what this is all about by taking part in a much shorter gravel road group ride that will take place on Saturday of the event.

How about 63 miles or less?

Called "Rob's M-COGG Ride", (Rob's Metric Century Of Gravelly Goodness), the event will be a casual gravel road ride of up to a metric century in length, (approximately 63 miles) with shorter loops available.

Curious?

Trans Iowa's Co-Director, Guitar Ted explains, "The ride is for anyone curious about what the Trans Iowa competitor faces out there on the gravel roads, or for anyone curious about gravel road bicycling." The invitation to ride goes out to the supporters and volunteers of T.I.V6, but anyone that has a bicycle in good working order can take part. The ride will have three basic loops that will go in and out of Grinnell so that riders can choose how far they want to go. The event will be led by Trans Iowa volunteer and experienced cyclist, Rob Versteegh.

Bike of Choice

Expect hills and lots of them. Also, you should strongly consider a bicycle with multiple gears and wider tires. Guitar Ted described bicycle choice for gravel rides this way, "A road racing bike could be used, but it is a handful on loose gravel and pinch flats are a big concern. Better off using a hybrid bike, mountain bike, or a cyclo-cross bike that features wider, more stable rubber if you are new to gravel road riding." For more on bicycle choices, or other questions about gravel road riding, Guitar Ted suggested calling Bikes To You in Grinnell for answers. (phone: 641-236-8600 or e-mail @ craig@bikestoyou.com) Rob's M-COGG Ride will take place at 10am on Saturday and will start in front of Bikes To You located in downtown Grinnell at 921 Broad St.

411 - Rob's M-COGG Ride

Expected length of the ride is 63 miles with shorter loop options.
  • The entire ride will be a "no rider left behind" type ride and should be over by late afternoon depending upon the strength of the group.
  • The event is free of charge. All riders are responsible for themselves.
  • No support will be available and all riders will be required to fend for themselves.
