Description
Just Plain Fun
Distance - n/a
The first-ever Iowa Bicycle Festival is a day of family-oriented fun events that "celebrate the bicycle and all who ride it." There’s no organized bike ride to this, although we anticipate a whole lot of cyclists will use our Raccoon River Valley Trail to come and stay for the festival, but we will have local cyclists lead tours of the town’s highlights – on bikes. We will also have a safety rodeo for kids; seminars on several cycling topics (RAGBRAI with TJ Juskiewicz, the Trails of Iowa with Andrea Chase of INHF, the Cycling & Art of Brian Duffy, bicycling business with Scott Sumpter of BikeIowa.com, and more; a fashion show of cycling apparel; a juried art show with a bicycle theme and major cash prizes; some funky bicycle competitions (like fastest tire-changing); a custom bicycle show, and maybe most fun of all, a special 11 a.m. parade that will feature bicyclists of all ages riding their decorated bikes and also featuring the famous “Team Buses of RAGBRAI.” Our promotion so far tells us we’ll probably have 2,000 to 3,000 cyclists from across Iowa attending, and we’re specifically recruiting the RAGBRAI teams and clubs to bring their colorful buses for the day. After the parade, we’ll then have the team buses on display for people to “tour.” We hope to have 20 to 30 of them. We’ll also have a plain white team bus here and a recognized graffiti artist who will lead festival attendees in painting it – that day!
