Recap/Results

A big thanks to everyone who came out today to endure the rain and
cool temperatures for the Iowa state cross championships (aka CX Mafia
#3). A special thanks to some new faces as well - including those who
traveled great distances (Utah) to join us.

I picked up a couple of items from the race...
- John: I have your long sleeve jersey
- Deb: I have your sunglasses
- Unknown: I have your set of wheels. Anyone who can identify the
wheels left in the wheel pit after the last race, email me and I can
arrange to get them to you. Hint - they're not Campy so they won't do
me any good. :)

On to the results...

CX Mafia #3/IA State Cross Champs
October 30, 2005
55 total riders
------------------------
Race 1:
The first race was our biggest "group" of the day with 35 riders
taking the start - including 12 of them for the Women Open (nice
job!!). In the men's "group" it quickly became the Cully Todd (40+)
show who effectively led the entire race with Paul Deninger (30+)
persistently chasing to keep 2nd place while William Hunstberger (SS)
took the final "overall" podium spot for 3rd. In the Women Open race,
the Newton faithful got to experience the world's fastest woman Lisa
Vetterlein take the early lead and hold it throughout to take the win.
Second and third place came down to wire with Darcy Sanford getting
over the final set of barriers and outsprinting Andrew Myers.

Race 2:
The second race was the "A" race with 1/2/3/Expert riders combined.
While the field was smaller, the racing was still intense with John
Olney, Nate Cline, and Lee Venteicher battling for an early lead. John
Olney turned on the jets however and quickly established a 40 second
lead over Nate by the 4th lap into the 9 lap race. Lee would maintain
contact until just over the halfway point when Nate pulled away for
good. A spirited effort by Jeremy Sievers on the last lap fell just
short of catching Lee.

1. John Olney (Gold) - 1st overall (49:35)
2. Nate Cline (Silver) - 2nd overall (-1:35)
3. Lee Venteicher (Bronze) - 3rd overall (-4:40)

3
------------
1. Jeremy Sievers (Gold) - 4th overall (-4:45)
2. Chris Maharry (Silver) - 5th overall (-1 lap)

Race 3:
The final race of the day was the 4/5/B race. Things stayed together
pretty well on the first lap, but that quickly ended when Thad Neil
took command and never looked back. The fight for second place came
down to a spirited last lap between Jim Robidoux and Dennis Grelk.
Dennis overcame a slow start to join up with Jim by the 3rd lap and
the two dueled from there on. Dennis had the edge going up
barrier/runup but Jim came on strong on the backside of the course to
finish clear of Dennis to take 2nd place.

4/5/B
------------
1. Thad Neil (Gold) - 39:45
2. Jim Robidoux (Silver) - (-1:01)
3. Dennis Grelk (Bronze) - (-1:10)
