Description

Tour

Distance - 200 ish miles

Join us for the first-ever "Loess Hills Parks & Peaks Bicycle Tour", a 4-day cycling tour of Western Iowa's magnificent Loess Hills. This rare landform, only found to this depth and extent in China, is home to more than spectacular views (especially in the fall). The bluffs are home to rare flora & fauna, recreational treasures and a host of charming small towns and businesses along the way. Throughout the ride we will have educational programming, making this a truly unique experience. Much of the route follows the Missouri River bottom and includes the Loess Hills National Scenic Byway (TM) and the Lewis & Clark Today Route. Snacks and refreshments will be provided during the day and at the campsites, and luggage will be transported from campsite to campsite. Camping is included in registration fees (bring your own tent and supplies, or contact us if you are in need of rentals), but there are nearby hotel options each night if you would prefer to arrange on your own. Advance registration is required and may be completed online or by mail, and includes a commemorative t-shirt. This ride is part of Loess Hills & Heritage Week, a collective week of events celebrating the Loess Hills. Questions? Call Golden Hills RC&D, and ask for Lance or Becca - 712-482-3029.

Route

Starting at Stone State Park north of Sioux City, and ending at Waubonsie State Park near Hamburg, the route will follow much of the Loess Hills National Scenic Byway as well as the Lewis & Clark Today Route, which is in the process of becoming the first designated and signed state bike route in Iowa.  There will be many opportunities for gravel loops for those looking to really explore the hills.  Route details, subject to change, are available at http://www.visitloesshills.org/bike-ride.html.
