Recap/Results

2016 was a record turn-out for Des Moines. We doubled the length of the
route and gained maximum exposure. It is estimated that 350-450 attended
the event.

The event had an extra-special meaning this year as
the trial was held for the killer of Wade Franck the week before the
ride. Wade was the Sales Manager at Kyle's Bikes and was killed by a
Drunk driver on a Sunday morning in August 2015 while participating in
the Urban Assault Ride.

Description

Safety/Education/Training

Distance - 5 miles

2016 marks the 12th year that we have been hosting a Ride of Silence in Des Moines.

Join cyclists nationwide in a silent slow-paced ride (max. 12 mph) in honor of those who have been injured or killed while cycling on America's public roadways. 6:30 pm -7:00 pm - various speakers and crowd participation to share why they come to the Ride of Silence and for who. Ride starts at 7:00 pm sharp. Check out the 2008 Ride of Silence Video

www.rideofsilence.org

Jim Freeman of Iowa Bike Law will also be speaking before the ride.

Why does this site exist?

  1. To HONOR those who have been injured or killed
  2. To RAISE AWARENESS that we are here
  3. To ask that we all SHARE THE ROAD

THE RIDE OF SILENCE WILL NOT BE QUIET On May 18th, the Ride of Silence will roll across the country, starting at 7:00 pm. Over 370+ U.S.locations in all 50 states and 52 other countries in all 7 continents will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves.

We'll ride a slow 10-12 mph or less.

--> the route is longer this year. We will ride even slower than we have in past. We will have two additional police escorts this year.

--> PLEASE stay tight as a group and hold your line. Feel free to use hand signals for 'slowing..' when needed. This will allow our police escorts the stop traffic at the 40+ intersections more safely.

--> This is called the Ride of Silence for a reason. We ride *IN SILENCE* to honor those who have been hit or killed. Please save the chatter for afterwards.

--> If you have lights and blinkies, please turn them ON.

--> There will be TWO re-group points. #1 on the red bridge off Court Ave. #2 on the circle drive West of the Capitol. At these stops, we will stop and re-group for a moment, then continue on.

--> We will take a photo in front of the Capitol when we re-group. We won't take long.

--> We will ride up the West Terrace. This is a large sidewalk to the East of the Capitol. Please YIELD to pedestrians.

--> Most importantly - PLEASE RIDE SAFE out there!
