The City of Windsor Heights is currently exploring opportunities for transportation improvements along University Avenue from 73rd Street to 63rd Street and is holding a public informational meeting for persons interested in the process.

We strongly encourage you to attend this event, there are some very innovative bicycle and pedestrian designs proposed that have not yet been used in our region.

Improvements that have been considered would follow the Complete Streets Initiative that was adopted by the Windsor Heights City Council on July 6, 2015. Complete Streets are streets that are designed and operated to enable safe access for all users, whether walking, bicycling, driving or riding transit. Complete Streets ensure people of all ages and abilities, including those with physical disabilities, are able to safely move along and cross streets in a community, regardless of how they are traveling.

A preliminary conceptual design of what University Avenue could transform to will be presented at the public meeting and will be open for input. Information will be available after the meeting as well at windsorheights.org.

As the Des Moines metro becomes more and more pedestrian and bike friendly, Windsor Heights is eager to supplement and enhance the past and on-going regionalized efforts. The proposed improvements to accommodate persons choosing alternative modes of transportation along University Avenue is a significant piece to that effort. The project includes an overlay from 69th Street to 73rd Street on University Avenue with the installation of a shared-use path along University from 73rd Street to 63rd Street. Finally, widening the south sidewalk down the stretch of University Avenue in Windsor Heights will complete the improvements.
