5 Friendly Communities, 2 Beautiful Lakes and ONE Great TRAIL!
We please to announce our newest sponsor - The Sauk Rail Trail!
We've spent some time on this trail and in the towns and we believe you'll enjoy the experience as much as we did.
The Sauk Rail Trail - The trail between two lakes
The
Sauk Rail Trail is a 33 mile concrete or asphalt multi-use recreational
trail located and managed by both the Sac and Carroll County
Conservation Boards. It is the first recreational trail in the state of
Iowa to connect two state parks. You can start in Lake View near
Blackhawk Lake State Park or in Swan Lake State Park south of Carroll.
Both state parks have lakes and camping facilities.

The
longest stretch between towns is 8 miles. Each community had many

in each town as you pedal through.
The Sauk Rail Trail Association
The
Sauk Rail Trail Association was formed in January of 2014 and has nine
directors from both Carroll and Sac Counties. It is a nonprofit
foundation dedicated to the promotion, education, welfare, and upkeep
of the Sauk Rail Trail. Currently, the SRTA sponsors two fundraising
events. The Ride the Rail bike ride in early summer and The Rivalry
Ride which is held the day of the Iowa v. Iowa State Football game. All
proceeds go towards trail improvements. The funds raised from these
two events along with private donations have allowed the association to
make the following improvements on the trail in 2014:
-Cement a portion of the trail South of Breda that had been gravel
-Helped to cement FOUR bridges that were previously wooden surface
-Paid for a portable restroom facility along the trail
Looking
ahead, the SRTA has plans to help cement three gravel crossings at the
DNR locations between Lake View and Carnarvon, assist the Sac
Conservation with building an additional shelter along the trail,
provide additional portable restroom facilities along the trail, improve
signage along the trail and in the communities, and continue to cement
bridges. In addition, the Association is working with the City of
Carroll to improve and integrate the trail within Carroll.
History
The Sauk Rail Trail is a 33 mile long multi-use recreational trail that
was completed in 1998. The trail is managed by both the Sac and Carroll
County Conservation Boards. It is the first recreational trail in the
state of Iowa to connect two state parks. It begins in Lake View near
Blackhawk Lake State Park and winds through the countryside of Sac and
Carroll counties, ending in Swan Lake State Park south of Carroll. The
trail surface is concrete from Lake View to Maple River Junction, and
asphalt from Maple River Junction to Swan Lake. It is an excellent place
for biking, walking, jogging and in-line skating and is open for
snowmobiling and cross-county skiing during the winter.
